Old Rugged Cross- Flatpick

guitar intermediate

In this lesson

I taught a fingerstyle version years ago, but I figured it's about time I flatpicked it! This is one of the most classic and timeless hymns, and for good reason. This arrangement can definitely take some practice, but I'll also show you how to simplify it in places and play it in a way that suits you.

Anybody have a tip for the left hand stretch in here? My pinky is not cooperating.

Metronome at 60 and no faster until it's clean twice through. Boring but it works.

Great question. That's a slide going into the B part — I play it as a slide but a hammer-on works fine if that's cleaner for you. Do what sounds right.

That's the one that made me finally understand backup. Stick with it.
