Bill Cheatham- Melodic

banjo advanced Free lesson

In this lesson

I had the distinct pleasure to spend 2 years apprenticing under the banjo great, Alan Munde. His melodic version of Bill Cheatham was always my favorite, and I'm offering it here as a tribute to him. He is widely regarded as a banjo great, but I also regard him as an incredible person and teacher as well.

Got about 80% of this one down but the third measure keeps tripping me. Anybody else find that part awkward at speed?

Metronome at 60 and no faster until it's clean twice through. Boring but it works.

I had that exact problem. Turned out my thumb was anchoring in the wrong spot.

Try measure 3 on its own at half tempo, and keep your right hand rolling even when the left hand is behind. The right hand is the metronome.

Try it without the pick for a few passes. Sounds silly but it told me my right hand was doing too much.
