Fisher's Hornpipe

mandolin intermediate

In this lesson

This song supposedly originated in the late 1700's, and is a popular folk, Celtic, bluegrass, and all-around party tune. If that doesn't give you the urgin' to learn it, well I reckon nothin' will! Check out this version of one beautiful melody!

My fingers know it but my brain doesn't yet — I can't play it without the tab in front of me. How do you all commit these to memory?

Try it without the pick for a few passes. Sounds silly but it told me my right hand was doing too much.

I had that exact problem. Turned out my thumb was anchoring in the wrong spot.

Metronome at 60 and no faster until it's clean twice through. Boring but it works.

Answered over in the tab thread too, but short version: play what's comfortable, the tab is a map not a law.
